Eastham

History

Orleans

History
Named after Louis-Phillippe de Bourbon, duc d’Orleans and in 1879 the town was physically connected to France via an underwater telegraph cable linking  U.S. to Europe.  Orleans was the first spot in America to learn of Lindbergh’s landing in Paris and the German occupation of France in 1940.

During World War I, Orleans was the only place in the United States to be directly attacked when a German submarine fired on commercial barges offshore, sinking four craft and hitting land.

Yarmouth

History
The Yarmouth Historical Society is located in the Captain Bangs Hallet House.  Another landmark is a home that was built in 1780 the Winslow Crocker House.  The Winslow Crocker House was originally built in West Barnstable and moved to Yarmouth Port in 1936.
